    Luxembourg will get Scania G480 all-terrain 8x8 trucks, similar to this G420 used by the Dutch Army. Netherlands bought 555 trucks from Scania in 2003.

    Scania announced receiving new orders for 8×8 all-wheel drive, mine protected trucks from the NATO military procurement & sustainment agency (NAMSA), to deliver 13 Type 8×8 G 480 trucks for the Luxembourg Army.

    The new, add-on mine-protected V-hull was presented at Eurosatory 2010 by Akers Krutbruk's. The armor system for the Scania truck was launched at Eurosatory in 2008, and was since installed on several hundred trucks. The design implements ballistic protection in an internal installation, thus maintaining a 'non aggressive' look. At the 2010 Eurosatory Akers introduced an additional facet of this system - an add-on V-shaped hull, attached to the standard chassis, improving the cab's protection from mine blast and IEDs.     Scania will also deliver 18 additional trucks without mine protection. According to Scania, this is the first application of the new STANAG Level 3 armor on a 13 ton truck. These new trucks will mostly be used on peace-keeping missions. Scania in cooperation with Swedish armor expert Akers Krutbruk has developed an add-on mine protected V-hull tailored for these trucks. 28 of the trucks will be fitted with hooklift bodywork and three with recovery body. Deliveries will take place during 2011.

    In addition, Scania announced another order for 88 logistics trucks from Sweden, part of an ongoing delivery agreement with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV). The new order includes 80 three-axle Scania G 400 6×2 logistics vehicles with hooklift bodywork. Four vehicles to be used for driver training are specified with four individual seats in the cab. FMV has also ordered eight four-axle Scania P 400 8×2 with crane and platform bodywork. These vehicles are fitted with the Scania Communicator 200 on-board data collector for remote follow-up of vehicle and driver performance via a web portal. Deliveries are scheduled for the first quarter of 2011. Scania introduced military vehicles built to meet NATO standard in 1998. Mine and ballistic protected vehicles were introduced in 2001.

    Gearing for the French Army next big program, vehicle manufacturers at Eurosatory were hopeful to learn about the defense ministry’s selection of the Scorpion system architect, a decision that would have set the program in motion. However, Scorpion, among other French military modernization initiatives fell prey to a 5 billion euro cut in government spending, leaving long lead programs stranded until budget is released. Eurosatory 2010 provided vehicle manufacturers an opportunity t showcase their designs but the sudden delay caused some to tone down their exposure.

    Renault and Nexter have brought Scorpion-related vehicles (EBRC and VBMR) to Eurosatory, displayed ‘by invitation only’ to only a few VIPs. Nexter plans to design its offerings based on the 6×6 XP2 experimental vehicle platform, of which three different configurations are proposed to replace the AMX-10RC and VAB. The Armored Multirole Carrier (AMC) from Renault is the company’s candidate for the Scorpion program. Renault has expressed its intention to compete for all three vehicle types to be included in the Scorpion program – the EBRC, to become the armored backbone of France’s rapid intervention force, future, networked troop carrier – VBMR, and the Mine Resistant Ambush protected (MRAP) type armored utility vehicle.

    Positioning itself as the leading provider for the ERBC, Panhard developed a technology demonstrator called Sphinx with internal funds, introducing an EBRC representative prototype enabling the company and the French defense establishment to study the operational functions of the EBRC. The Sphinx was the only candidate shown publicly at Eurosatory 2010. Unlike Nexter and Renault, aiming to compete for more than one platform of the Scorpion program, Panhard visions only at the EBRC, leaving the rest of the competition to other rivals.

    Sherpa Light SOF

    At the 2010 Eurosatory Renault Trucks Defense introduced the refined ‘Sherpa Light‘ family of tactical vehicles, featuring the 13.3 ton, 4×4 transport vehicle designed specifically to support special missions. Carrying five soldiers and up to 2.6 tons of cargo, the new Sherpa provides high mobility light forces, traversing all types of terrain with sufficient payload capacity to support paratroops, marines and light infantry on extended missions. The vehicle is transportable by C-130 and A400M transport aircrafts. The platform is based on the Sherpa 2 introduced two years ago at Eurosatory 2008. Our video coverage will be posted soon…

    M2 diesel motorcycles from HDT

    At the dynamic demonstration at the recent Eurosatory 2010 exhibition in Paris, France the U.S. company HDT displayed new diesel powered M2 cross motorcycle and U1 tactical four-wheeled ’quad’ tactical support all-terrain vehicle, both vehicles are designed for special ops. Both M2 and U1 are powered by a single-cylinder engine – the MAC-C1 advanced multiple heavy fuel engine consuming almost any type of liquid carbon fuel. According to HDT, the development of the 760 cc M1030-M2 engine and motorcycle was purpose-built for military applications. The M2 has a maximum speed of 152km/h and a range of 653km at 90km/h.

    The U1 comes in a two and four seat configuration. The two-seat version is the support vehicle, accommodating two soldiers and ample room to carry equipment on a rear flat cargo bed. Both all-terrain quad vehicles have a 1,340 cc engine with a continuously variable, belt drive transmission running two or four-wheel drive. Both variants have a rollover cage, but on the tactical vehicle there is a quick exit for the rear-facing seats.
